Corona boosts intrapreneurship in companies
The Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation at the University of Bayreuth has published the „Intrapreneurship Monitor 2021“, currently the largest study on the topic in the German-speaking world. In order to map the intrapreneurship scene in Germany, 603 companies were surveyed. The most important finding is that companies are increasingly building on intrapreneurship to secure their long-term competitiveness. The coronavirus crisis is seen as an important catalyst here.
Intrapreneurship is a long-neglected but very important facet of entrepreneurship. The Intrapreneurship Monitor 2021 of the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Bayreuth is dedicated to this topic. It systematically identifies the potential and challenges of intrapreneurship activities throughout Germany. In addition to a comprehensive survey of 603 companies, the communication of intrapreneurship in DAX companies was also examined and an extensive series of interviews conducted.
While 72% of the companies surveyed already pursue intrapreneurship activities in their company either at the employee or organisational level, only 29% have their own specialised department or an intrapreneurship programme that takes care of intrapreneurship activities centrally. A more detailed breakdown by company size shows that larger companies in particular have created structures for this. It also shows that companies with their own intrapreneurship department are more often the first to introduce new products in their respective industries (50%) than companies without their own department (30%).
In promoting intrapreneurship activities, the companies surveyed focus in particular on the provision of additional time, material, and financial resources. 68% of the companies surveyed emphasised the provision of employee time. This is almost 20 percentage points more than in the previous year. The Intrapreneurship Monitor 2021 makes it clear that intrapreneurship and innovation activities are a way of dealing with the effects of the crisis. Approx. 25% of the companies surveyed assess the disruptive character of the coronavirus crisis as consistently positive. The companies surveyed are using the crisis to optimise their processes (42%) and to develop new products (35%) or new business areas (35%). A development that has clearly increased compared to the previous year. The Monitor gives clear indications that the promotion of entrepreneurial thinking among employees goes hand in hand with an increased amount of business.
For the Monitor, 603 companies of all sizes were surveyed under the scientific direction of Prof. Dr. Rodrigo Isidor, Chair of Human Resource Management & Intrapreneurship at the University of Bayreuth, and Prof. Dr. Matthias Baum, Chair of Entrepreneurship & Digital Business Models at the University of Bayreuth. They provided information on how their intrapreneurship programmes are designed, what challenges exist in the implementation of such programmes and what influence intrapreneurship activities have on dealing with the coronavirus crisis.
The Intrapreneurship Monitor serves to analyse and improve innovation activities in companies. On the one hand, it is the basis for research in the field of intrapreneurship, and on the other hand, the results and findings derived from it enable representatives from corporate practice to better evaluate their own intrapreneurship activities.
The Intrapreneurship Monitor 2021 was conducted and published by the Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation at the University of Bayreuth in cooperation with the August-Wilhelm Scheer Institute for Digital Products and Processes GmbH.
